Second Year of Uni

We have two months until we begin our second year of university and we’ve already moved into our student house. We’re looking forward to our second year, as this year we’ve chosen electives which are more tailored to what we want to do in the future and with our careers. Courtney has taken celebrity journalism, podcasting and feature writing, whereas I have taken sports journalism, music journalism and podcasting.

The format of second year will be completely different because of the pandemic, with our big written lectures being held online whereas our seminars and practicals will be held in smaller groups in person, at least until second semester. We know it’s going to be different because we’re not in halls this year, surrounded by other students, so you have to make the effort to go to other peoples houses and arrange to actually see them. At least we aren’t going into our first year and missing out on freshers, meeting course mates and flat parties.

Obviously, the work load for second year will be heavier and we won’t all have the same assignments this time, they may be due at different times. This means we’ll have to structure our time better and be more organised.

Luckily for us, most of our friendship group live together or very close by, so we can still go out and do things as we’re in the same bubble. It’s also lucky that both of us drive, so we don’t have to take public transport to see anyone and we can go further with less risk.

All the clubs we’re used to going to have been turning into bars, in order to keep themselves open and making money. Night outs are a massive part of university and knowing that will change next year is strange. Some people may not even want to go on nights out for safety reasons.
