Looking back at summer 2020

This summer hasn’t been what we expected it to be, or what anyone expected it to be. At the start of the year we had so many plans and holidays which we soon realised weren’t going to happen.
First of all our summer was cut short. We expected to spend the beginning of it at university and experience summer on campus and summer nights with everyone before we ended up spread around the country. But instead, like everyone, we spent it in lockdown.
As you can imagine we were gutted, but luckily our house contract started in July and we planned to move in as soon as we could after spending months at home. But this did allow us to spend the start of summer with our families and friends in our home town and spend our last teenage summer doing what we were doing when we first became teenagers, the trend of being back drinking in the park. The highlights of going to university in the city allows us to experience both a country and a city summer.

When we all moved in we started catching up on lost time and spent basically every hour of the day together. We went on plenty of trips to the beach, watched the sunsets, went shopping, explored the city, went for cocktails and tried new food, things we probably wouldn’t have done if we weren’t stuck in the UK. This time has forced us to appreciate the area we live in and find new places for staycations that we will definitely revisit in the future.

A lot of our friends from home couldn’t move into their uni houses until the start of September, whereas we were allowed to move in early July allowing us to keep our independence. This time allowed us to experiment with cooking and find new recipes which have become staples and things we didn’t really have time to do during first year.
Freshers was completely different this year, nothing how it was last year. Instead of spending every night in a different club we rarely left the house. We knew it would be different but we didn’t realise how much.
“It has been an unexpected, but fun filled summer.” – Natasha Downing
Although we were stuck in the country we’ve looked back over summer and realised it wasn’t all that bad. We have made plenty of memories, tried loads of new things and it definitely will be a summer to remember.
