Halloween 2020

Halloween 2020 was completely different from what we had planned. Last year, we spent it at flat parties before going to clubs in Manchester, but with new lockdown rules and no longer living in student accommodation, we had to throw our own party, with just our housemates.
We still dressed up, and coordinated our outfits so we’d all match. We decided to go as cowgirls, and bought different coloured skirts and hats from each other. Because we couldn’t go out, we didn’t want to waste loads of money on costumes so this seemed like a good alternative for us.
To get ourselves more in the Halloween mood, we bought some cheap decorations for the living room: a pumpkin garland and a pin-up skeleton, which we named Mr Bonejangles. To replace fishbowls in clubs, we bought our own buckets, colour matched to our outfits of course, and some bendy straws to do our best to replicate a club. We even put flashing lights on the TV and used a speaker to blast the playlist we’d specially made. One positive was only music that we liked was playing.
While we’ve been in tiered lockdowns, it’s been difficult for us to find time to get dressed up as much as we used to so Halloween gave us plenty of chance to. Putting a full face of make up on and getting ready with the music blasting, it felt like first year all over again.
Despite enjoying Halloween this year, we can’t wait for it to eventually go back to normal. We saw everyone celebrating this year on social media and shops were empty of Halloween decorations. We didn’t even have time to get pumpkins or go pumpkin picking like we did last year, so our housemates ended up carving melons.
